August 1: MTV Is Launched. (1981)
August 1, 1981 – On This Date In Hip-Hop, MTV was launched — and guess what: THESE N*GGAS REALLY PLAYED MUSIC VIDEOS back then… Speaking of n*ggas, the rock-based network didn’t start “rockin” with us until some time later in ‘83 when Michael Jackson had Billie Jean [and later on Thriller]. MJ kicked in the door for Blacks and Yo MTV Raps hit in August of ’88.
And now here is how the brand met its ultimate demise – as far as “Music Television” goes.
