August 11, 1973 – On This Date In Hip-Hop, Hip-Hop was born when Kool DJ Herc decided to use two copies of the same record in order to extend the breakbeat at a back to school jam at 1520 Sedgwick Ave in the Bronx. The isolation of the instrumental formed the basis of Hip-Hop music as emcees would speak and later rap over the extended break and BreakDancers would dance to it. The greatest day ever in my opinion.
Happy late birthday to one of the single most important days in modern history! This will most likely be an underrated day in history FOREVER. Let’s hope it’s not though.
