January 4, 2016 – On This Date In Hip-Hop, The Breaks, a story of 3 friends united by their love of Hip Hop, premiered on VH1.
The Movie
“The Breaks,” a VH1 original film, is a riveting exploration of the hip-hop scene set against the backdrop of New York City in the 1990s. The movie follows the journey of three friends – Nikki Jones, David Aaron, and DeeVee – each with their unique aspirations within the burgeoning hip-hop industry. Nikki, portrayed by Afton Williamson, dreams of becoming a music executive, while David Aaron, played by David Call, aspires to be a producer, and DeeVee, played by Mack Wilds, aims to make a name for himself as a DJ.
The film was scored by DJ Premier. Method Man in there too.
VH1 would later pick up The Breaks to become a full television series. “The Breaks” series on VH1 lasted for one season, consisting of a total of eight episodes. The show first premiered on February 20, 2017, and concluded its run on April 10, 2017.
This series had potential. I was pissed VH1 took it off.
